The New Testament Church of God

Thank you for taking the time to find out more about New Testament Church of God (NTCG), Handsworth.

The New Testament Church of God, George Street, Lozells, represents many things in general and stands as two things in particular.

Firstly, it is the product of approximately fifty years of commitment, endeavour and sacrifice given by men and women who formed part of the arrival of new citizens to post-war Great Britain from the islands of the Caribbean.

Secondly, it is part of a continuing Christian presence in the Lozells and Handsworth area of Birmingham, a presence that has the best part of 150 years history and progress to be thankful to God. The foundations of what has fondly become known as George Street Church were laid in the 1950's as Christians met together for the purposes of prayer in each others homes before larger premises became available in Aston and Birmingham City Centre.

It was during this time that the present 'home' was first used for evening meetings, a premises then owned by Methodist Christians. As a result of a growing number of people becoming aware of these gatherings, new members became involved in 1953, the New Testament Church was officially organised.

Other areas of Birmingham and the West Midlands were both explored and visited in a search for Christians who were affiliated to any particular church. In 1956, worshippers moved to the former School Hall in Boulton Road, Handsworth where six years of steady growth both spiritually and in terms of economic resources allowed membership to increase further. 1962 was a significant year for the church as this was when it would finally acquire a premises to call its own.

The Aston Villa Methodist Church had existed since 1850 with the building itself opening in 1865. Circumstances led to its availability for purchase which the New Testament Church of God members took full advantage of. Among its continuing legacies, apart from the Christian presence in the area, is the professional football club which bears its name. From 1962 onwards, the Church's growth and influence increased both to other Christians living in the city and to the wider community.

In 1978, a Supplementary School was established to assist with the education of children. The most recent development has been the opening of the George Street Community nursery, providing childcare and pre school education for under-five children. Further projects will include increased programmes for the elderly and the homeless and a greater involvement in the life of the Lozells / Handsworth community.

Today, the New Testament Church of God, George Street, Lozells forms part of an international body with over 100 churches in the United Kingdom, with a National Office in Northampton and congregations in more than 152 countries around the world. The church itself has a membership of about 300, varying in age with the desire to serve the community in which it finds itself.
